Cox Savory, 47 Cornhill, London” and individually numbered “No. 519.”  Thomas Cox Savory was a respected London goldsmith, watchmaker, and retailer operating from the historic Cornhill district, one of England’s most celebrated centers for fine clocks, watches, and scientific instruments during the nineteenth century. The retailer’s engraved signature and serial number add an exceptional level of authenticity and collector appeal.

Powering the clock is its original English single-fusee chain-driven eight-day movement with anchor escapement. The heavy brass plates, turned pillars, original fusee chain, and quality construction reflect the craftsmanship expected from a fine London retailer. During inspection, the dial was removed and the movement carefully examined. The clock displays the honest construction and originality collectors seek, with no evidence of mismatched components or significant alteration.

The beautifully figured rosewood case is executed in the Georgian taste, featuring an elegant pagoda top, brass side sound frets, glazed front and rear doors, and traditional bun feet. This clock presents beautifully with the character expected of a well-preserved Victorian example. The movement is clean, running, and displays excellent originality. The rosewood case retains a beautiful antique patina with minor age-related veneer movement and wear consistent with a clock of this age.
