What does automatic night shutoff do?

It silences the clock’s sound during the model’s designated nighttime period while timekeeping continues. The schedule and which sounds are muted depend on the movement; check the individual specifications.

Is that the same as a light sensor?

No. A timed shutoff follows a schedule; a light sensor responds to the room becoming dark. A manual switch needs to be operated by hand. Choose the control that fits how you use the room.
